TBOWT 034 – Selling Books by the Truckload: A Recap of the Association of Publishers for Special Sales Conference
January 12, 2014
Today’s episode is with Dave Mattingly of Blackwyrm Publishing, and Peggy and Larry DeKay. It turns out we all attended the APSS (Association of Publishers for Special Sales) conference held in Philadelphia in November 2013. In this podcast, Larry, Dave and I talk about some of the presentations that we attended during the two-day event. We also discuss the importance of networking.
The APSS conference, although characterized as a “publishers” conference, is also a great resource for authors and micro publishers. There was a great deal of information available to all attendees. The APSS conference is a conference all three of us recommend. Since there were so many helpful websites, books, and other resources I have decided to list some of those below for your review.
I encourage you to think about putting this conference and the Summit (http://businessofwritingsummit.com) on your “conferences to do this year” list.
Here are some of the highlights:
Brian Jud, Executive Director of APSS and an author along with his partner Guy Achtzehn gave two great talks on building book sales through specialty markets. Brian has an excellent book available on building books sales through specialty markets called How to Make Real Money Selling Books.
Talk by Beat (pronounced Bay-Yacht) Barblan, the Director of Identifier Services for Bowker. (http://myidentifiers.com)―the North American providers of ISBN’s. http://bowker.com
Judith Briles, The Book Shepherd gave a wonderful presentation on Crowdsourcing and book marketing. Her latest book is called Author YOU: Creating and Building your Author and Book Platforms.
Amy Collins did a presentation on selling your book to big box stores. She has worked for F&W Media and others and now is the CEO of her own book distribution business called New Shelves Distribution. Amy has also spoken at the Business of Writing International Summit in Louisville (www.businessofwritingsummit.com)
Carol McManus gave a presentation on LinkedIn. Carol’s background was in social media for real estate agents. She now has her own consulting business, blog talk radio show and is an expert on LinkedIn.

Thank you for long list of specialty markets, it is very thorough. My book is still a WIP, but I hope to publish it by the end of this year … that’s my goal anyway. I’m glad you are making more podcasts; I really enjoy them and learn a lot!
